Sharing Memories

When I was Pixies age we moved to Japan. My dad was in the army so we moved every 2 to 3 years. Once there, I found out there was no American television. Of course I did not speak Japanese therefore I could not understand anything on t.v. I would sit and try to follow what was happening but to no avail. Luckily we had the armed forces radio network. At night before I went to sleep I would turn on the radio to listen to programs like The Shadow or Sherlock Holmes or Mystery Theater. Sometimes they would play the old comedy routines of Abbott and Costello or Jack Benny. Mind you, most of these programs were before my time. This was the stuff people listened to before everyone had t.v. I really had fond memories of laying there in the dark listening to the dramas playing out imagining how the characters looked or what the scene looked like. Sometimes getting a little scared, or laughing hysterically at some silly joke.

So the other day for some reason I remember all of this and I thought wouldn't it be nice to be able to share this with Pixie. So I google old radio shows and sure enough there are a bunch of sites where you can download them. I found all of them, and more shows I never new were out there. The Chronicles of Narnia. Andy Griffin. Boris Karloff. Just to name a few. I got so excited. I went straight to Pixie and asked her if she would like to listen with me. Last night we listened to Mystery Theatre. I think tonight we will go to Narnia.

I feel like I am able to share a little snippet of my childhood with Pixie through this. Though we now plug our earphones into the laptop instead of tuning in the radio, I went back in time. And just for a few moments last night I was a 9 year old girl, listening, imagining and wondering what would happen next.

Enchiladas Anyone?

I tried this recipe and my family loved it! Pixie wants enchiladas at least once a week now. My friend Undercover Brunette tried and and she really enjoyed it too. I boil boneless skinless chicken breasts and then cut them into small pieces. You can also use cream of mushroom soup if you like. Tastes good either way. Enjoy!

"1 can (10 3/4 ounces) Campbell's® Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup (Regular, 98% Fat Free or 25% Less Sodium)
1 container (8 ounces) sour cream
1 cup Pace® Picante Sauce
2 teaspoons chili powder
2 cups chopped cooked chicken
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese (about 4 ounces)
10 flour tortillas (6-inch), warmed
1 medium tomato, chopped (about 1 cup)
1 green onion, sliced (about 2 tablespoons)
Directions:
Stir the soup, sour cream, picante sauce and chili powder in a medium bowl.
Stir 1 cup picante sauce mixture, chicken and cheese in a large bowl.
Spread about 1/4 cup chicken mixture down the center of each tortilla. Roll up and place seam-side down in a 3-quart shallow baking dish. Pour the remaining picante sauce mixture over the filled tortillas. Cover the baking dish.
Bake at 350°F. for 40 minutes or until the enchiladas are hot and bubbling. Top with the tomato and onion."

A Moment to Remember

Even though this was 2nd grade. This is definitely a moment to remember. The Dixie Pixie received the Ruth Award from her wonderful teacher, Mrs. Best 2nd grade teacher ever. The Ruth Award is given to a select few who show outstanding christian character. A joyful day indeed!!

GVA Here We Come

Ok so here we go! This is my first blog. The reason I decided to do this is to chronicle a new chapter in my life. HOME SCHOOL!! (cue ominous music)

I am using the K-12 curriculum through the public school system. Which means I'm not the teacher, I am the "coach". I admit it I am completely intimidated by the thought of teaching a curriculum all by myself, all alone with no guidance, with no one there to catch me when, not if, I fall. For all of you brave moms out there who do, bless your heart! Big "worlds greatest mom award" to you! I unwilling and unable. (at least now anyway)

I found K12/GVA completely by accident online. I trying it for the first time for the 2009/2010 school year. It looks like it will suit our needs perfectly. I like the idea of my child working at her own pace. Pixie is a smart girl, she's made straight A's throughout. I just feel like she can work at an accelerated pace. Her last school was great, but the pixie needs more than what a traditional school can offer. I want more for her as well. I want her education to be exciting and interesting and most of all I want to be hands on, and all in!!
I fully expect to succeed sometimes and other times to fall flat on my face. I intend to try my best! I'll take it with a grain of salt, and keep a smile on my face.
